“Senate recommends N4,800, N8,400 for Driver’s License, Number Plates” - Punch

A kind of war has been going on for a while now between car owners in Nigeria and the Federal Road Safety Commission ((FRSC), due to the latter’s introduction of new number plates and guidelines in obtaining the driver’s license.

Nigerians have been complaining that the Commission showed insensitivity by jacking up the fee for a new number plate, and coming out with a stringent guideline to obtain or renew the driver’s license while giving a short deadline after which vehicles might be confiscated.

To be truthful, the process of obtaining driver’s license in Nigerian was fundamentally flawed.

Quite a number of people who holds driver’s license cannot drive any vehicle whatsoever, hence any manner the government deems fit to correct this anomaly should be welcomed by all. But as we all know, government policies in Nigeria are, many of the times, not well-thought out.

It seems our politicians and government officials live in a world completely different from the rest of us. How do you explain the bringing up of the fee for a new license from N4,000 to N8,000 and a number plate from around N8,000 to N15,000.

Meanwhile, the over-the-top increments are only on paper as people pay double that amount due to the activities of middlemen and touts

The Senate has taken a huge step by coming to the aid of the masses and suspending the FRSC action. The Senate Committee on Federal Character and Intergovernmental Affairs has also come out with a new people-friendly price regime. For once, the National Assembly should be commended.
